FunandStress

Why Digital Media Can Feel Fun and Stressful at the Same Time

Enjoyment with a hidden cost

Many children and teenagers enjoy digital media. They watch videos, play games, chat with friends and relax online. At the same time, a large number of them say digital media also makes them feel stressed, tired or pressured. The 2024 report from the Swedish Media Authority shows that these two experiences often exist side by side. Enjoyment does not cancel out stress.

Always connected, rarely off

One reason for this tension is constant connectivity. Messages, updates and notifications can arrive at any moment. Even when nothing happens, many young people feel the need to check, respond or stay available. This creates a low-level pressure that does not always feel dramatic, but is hard to escape. Being reachable all the time leaves little room for mental rest.

Social expectations add weight

Digital media is deeply social. For many young people, online spaces are where friendships live. But social contact online can also bring comparison, fear of missing out and expectations to react quickly or stay visible. The report shows that this social layer is a common source of stress, especially among teenagers. Enjoyment and pressure often come from the same platforms.

When fun turns into fatigue

Over time, constant stimulation and social demands can lead to tiredness, difficulty concentrating and a feeling of being overwhelmed. Some young people describe wanting to disconnect, but finding it hard to step away. This does not mean digital media is harmful by default. It means that without clear pauses, even enjoyable experiences can become draining.

Making space for relief

Stress linked to digital media is often reduced when young people have clear breaks, device-free moments and time without expectations to respond. Quiet time, offline activities and sleep all help restore balance. When digital media has a place, but not all the space, enjoyment becomes easier to sustain.
